As one of the first named officers of the 1915 incorporation of Smyrna. Dr. JS Lowry was listed as Commissioner of streets, walks, lights and water, In later elections he also served as commissioner of health and public safety. While involved in the business of Smyrna, he also was one who worked for the good of Smyrna.

Dr Lowry also was prominent in getting the Sam Davis home made into a state shrine. He also was involved in the subscription program that helped build the first stone and frame high school for Smyrna after World War 1. During 1921-22 Dr Lowry had “moving pictures” shown in the new school auditorium on Friday nights.  His other interests ranged from the Business men’s club, Smyrna Horse Show association, USO (United Service Association) all the way to scouting.

The long range impact of a person like Dr Lowry from helping organize the land purchases for Sewert’s Air Force base, to organizing town fairs cannot be understated.
